The Set Up
When setting up, use these four basic keys:
- Grip
- Alignment
- Posture
- Ball Position
Step 1 Standing straight up, place the club in the left hand while the arm is hanging to the side. Join the right hand onto the grip by bringing the club to the center.
Step 2 Turn the head to look at the target. Align your body and club square to the target.
Step 3 Bend at the hips keeping the lower back flat, and relax the shoulders. Finish this step by flexing the knees. At this point, the front edge of the shoulders, front edge of the knees, and toes should be in alignment.
Step 4 Place the ball two inches inside the left heel and widen the right foot to a comfortable stance. The recommended width is to start out at shoulder width with the short irons and increasing the width slightly with each club through the driver. This helps to create a slightly sharper angle of descent with the short irons and becoming slightly more rounded and flattened as the stance widens. At this point, the arms, hands, and club should be hanging comfortably underneath the shoulders.
Exercises and Drills
Pendulum Drill
(This drill will help build and enhance the correct swing path, proper delivery position, and acceleration through the hitting area. The correct feel of swinging the club can also be learned or regained.)
Begin by taking the club back to hip high and double pump with the right hand and bell. The right hand pressure should feel extremely light and loose during this action.
Swing the club back and forth non-stop to waist high and slowly build to a full swing.
On the backswing, make only your maximum relaxed turn. At the top of the backswing, the right arm will be more behind you than normal due to the separation of the hands. It will also be in an L-shaped position, similar to serving a pizza or holding a plate.
Next, look for the right hand and bell to slide at the proper time. Begin sliding the bell to reconnect at waist high on the forwardswing and focus on reconnecting the grips in the impact zone. Take time to master the coordination of your body with the club. The correct technique with a fluid motion should be the main focus.
The Throw Drill
(This drill will promote a full extension and a complete follow-through)
Hold a golf ball in the right hand in the set up position and swing the right arm underhanded straight down to the target line. Throw the ball down the target line (release to the target, not at it). Try this same exercise holding the grip of Kallassy's Swing Magic with the right hand only. Swing the club back and forth along the target line focusing on a full extension and complete follow through.
The Step Drill
(Side to side shuffle for proper weight shift, and to aid in coordinating the upper and lower body motion. This drill will also help promote good balance.)
Swing the club pendulum style and move the left foot towards the right foot on the backswing. Bring the left foot back towards the target followed by the club on the forwardswing. Key on the left foot following the shaft on the backswing and then leading the shaft on the forwardswing during this drill.
The Rhythm and Tempo Drill
(This drill will help to find the rhythm, feel, shape, timing, and freedom of swinging the golf club without any mechanical thoughts)
Use the pendulum drill for this exercise, with the focus on coordinating the upper body, lower body, and the golf club. Listen for the clicking of the bell gliding up and down the shaft as the club goes back and through. The clicking should sound rhythmic and not rushed or slowed down. Listening to the sound of the bell gliding on the shaft will help to find the rhythm, shape, timing, and freedom of swinging the golf club.
